Make a isolation room
The first time you bring a new kitten, you need to make some isolation room away from the dog. This is important for the kitten to start adapt with the new house alone without any disturbance from other animals, depending on the kitten’s personalities, it can takes about several days to weeks so be prepared!
When getting a kitten when you have a dog, you can try to feed them on opposite sides of closed doors for a week. The doors should be made from solid materials so the pets cannot see through it. Both the dog and kitten will start to associate each other smells, sounds, etc.
When the dog starts to bark, you should calm it by saying ‘no!’ Even without the pets are looking at each other directly, you can expose their presence slowly from the smells and sounds.
Put the dog on leash while the kitten in crate
This is important to introduce the pets without physical contact for the first time. You can bring the dog still on leash closer to the crate where the kitten is. Command the dog to stay still and see the cats without physical contact and if ignore you then you can walk the dog out. Try this as some training for around 5 minutes several times a day.
