How to Take Care of Kittens
If you have young cats in your house, then you might want to know how to take care of kittens as taking care of young cats need more work than adult cat. For adult cat, mostly you only need to give them food as well as cleaning. But for younger kitten, there are a lot of other things that you need to do for them.
How to Take Care of Kittens After Their Birth
If your cat has mother, then on two days after they are born you need to leave all of the taking care with their mother as it is an important time for their mother to be bonded with their mother. But it is another thing if you need to care of them without their mother, then you need to really take care of them from the start.
If your kittens still have mother, then all you need to do is to feed their mother and leave the entire taking care job with their mother. Then all you need to do is to give food and drink for their mother as well as the litter. However, you need to leave all of those things in the same room as the kittens since the mother would not go too far from her kittens after they give birth for at least two weeks.
For the mother food, she will need to get more calories which she needs to make milk for her kittens. That is why; you need to ensure that her food contains the extra calories that she need and kitten food is the one that suitable for this purpose.
For the cleaning, you do not need to worry as the mother will do this job by herself. But of course once their bedding is soiled, then you need to replace it with a new one. However, do not do it when the mother is still around since it will make her uncomfortable. You need to do it while the mother leaves her nest for toilet break.
Another thing to consider is to spay the mother after sometime since it will really help their health and to help her so they would not be suffering. But of course, you need to take care of the mother and kitten after neutering her.
Now if you need to take care of orphaned kitten, it is another case to do. As they do not get milk from anywhere then you need to give them some milk replacement especially on the first 4 weeks. However, do not give cow milk to the kitten as they cannot digest it and it will only make them sick.
What you need to do is to give special milk replacement for kitten that you can get in the pet store or from the vets. But if you cannot get one immediately, then you can boil water and cool them down before giving it to the kitten. This will keep them hydrated so you will have time to go to get the milk replacement.
To give the milk, then you can try to use special kitten bottle that sold in the same store. But if you could not find any, then you can try to use syringe without the needle then drop the milk right away in her mouth. You need to feed her every two or even three hours for 2 weeks then afterwards you can add longer duration for every three or even four hours.
Do not forget to burp her after she finish eating by doing the same thing that you do to a baby. Hold her straight in your hand so her belly will be in your palm. Then rub her back very gently to trigger her to burp. Another thing that you need to do before as well as after the meal is to trigger the kitten elimination since they cannot do it by her at first. What you need to do is to rub her genital as well as anal area using pepper towel then soak it using warm water.
Keeping the kitten body warm is also important thus try to use heating pad which specially designed for kitten and you can also get one in the store where you bought the milk and bottle from.
